What is Nobivac® Bb for cats?
Developed by Intervet, Nobivac® Bb for cats is a vaccine containing an avirulent live culture of Bordetella bronchiseptica for the prevention of disease in cats caused by this bacteria.

Which cats should I consider vaccinating with Nobivac® Bb for cats?
As with all vaccines, vaccination should be performed according to a risk-assessment performed by the veterinarian under the consultation of the requirements of the owner. Typically, Nobivac® Bb for cats should be given to all cats (alongside the usual Nobivac® Tricat or Forcat) where the owner requires the most comprehensive protection available against feline URTD. In addition, Nobivac® Bb for cats should be recommended for the following high-risk groups:

  • Cats from multicat households (3 or more cats)
  • Cats being boarded
  • Cats in breeding catteries
  • Cats in rescue shelters
  • Cats in contact with dogs with a recent history of respiratory disease
  • Kittens, especially those obtained from rescue shelters and breeding catteries

Are there other products on the market to protect against Bordetella bronchiseptica infection in cats?
No. Nobivac® Bb for cats is the first and only vaccine available for use in cats for the prevention of disease caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica.

How is Nobivac® Bb for cats administered?
Nobivac® Bb for cats is an easy-to-administer, low-volume dose (0.2 ml), single nostril, intranasal vaccine that can be given to kittens as young as 4 weeks of age. Safely. Effectively. Reliably.

Why have Intervet developed an intranasal rather than an injectable vaccine against Bordetella bronchiseptica?
Intranasal Bordetella bronchiseptica vaccines have been shown to provide dual protection by inducing a local mucosal immune response and a systemic response. Local immune responses work rapidly even in the face of maternally derived antibody. Our studies have shown that Nobivac® Bb for cats works quickly, even in young kittens. This is particularly important for the most at-risk including: cats entering catteries and kittens which are obtained from breeders or rescue shelters. Furthermore, intranasal vaccination with Nobivac® Bb for cats is pain-free and causes no local reactions.

What happens if the cat sneezes after vaccination?
The vaccine has been formulated such that it will be effective even though cats sneeze immediately after vaccination - this is perfectly normal and does not affect the efficacy of vaccination in any way.

How quickly can onset of immunity be expected after administering Nobivac® Bb for cats?
Onset of immunity studies have shown that protection can be expected within 72 hours after administration.

What is the duration of immunity of Nobivac® Bb for cats?
Duration of immunity studies have shown that protection lasts for 1 year. For continual protection against Bordetella bronchiseptica infection, it is recommended that kittens and cats receive an annual dose of Nobivac® Bb for cats. Otherwise, cats should be vaccinated at least 72 hours prior to stressful situations and when risk of exposure exists, such as boarding, transporting, breeding or participating in cat shows.

At what age can kittens begin receiving vaccinations with Nobivac® Bb for cats?
Studies have shown that Nobivac® Bb for cats is safe and effective in kittens as young as four weeks of age.

What types of reactions may occur with Nobivac® Bb for cats?
In field trials field safety studies 98% of vaccinated cats were reaction-free. Those reactions reported were all mild in nature and all affected cats recovered uneventfully. The most common sign was transient sneezing 48-72 hours post vaccination. Sneezing was self-limiting and resolved without treatment.

What advise do I give clients who own rescue shelters, boarding and breeding catteries?
Bordetella bronchiseptica can be a considerable problem in these environments leading to outbreaks of severe respiratory disease and kitten mortality. Nobivac® Bb for cats should be included in the existing vaccination program to help reduce the incidence of morbidity and mortality and the requirement for antibiotic therapy. Your clients should be advised to visit the Cattery section of this site for more information.

Can this vaccine be used on cats that currently have an unspecified upper respiratory tract disease (URTD)?
Vaccines are designed for administration to healthy animals to prevent disease. Cats that currently have upper respiratory tract disease URTD should be treated and allowed to recover prior to vaccination with any product.

Can Nobivac® Bb for cats be given with antibiotics?
No. Vaccines should only be administered to healthy animals. Nobivac® Bb for cats contains an avirulent live strain of bacteria; consequently, an antibiotic could inactivate the vaccine strain. Therefore, an animal that has been on antibiotic treatment should not receive Nobivac® Bb for cats until after the antibiotic has been eliminated from the body, which is generally 48 to 72 hours after cessation of treatment. If antibiotics are given within 1 week of vaccination with Nobivac® Bb the vaccination should be repeated after the antibiotic course has been completed.

What can Intervet do to help vets and nurses communicate with owners about the problem of Bordetella bronchiseptica?

The cats-at-risk.com website for cat owners reinforces this message and provides additional information to support your client advise.
