Despite widespread vaccination of cats against feline calici virus (FCV) and feline herpes virus (FHV), feline upper respiratory tract disease (URTD) remains a problem in cat populations. Increasing attention has been directed towards the importance of Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb) in the development of URTD.

Since 1991 there have been many publications reporting isolation of Bb from cats with URTD. Recent research suggests that Bb is widespread in cats. Between a quarter and four-fifths of studied cats have evidence of Bb exposure.
